Dot-Art uses a photograph, and creates a template that can be used to make a completely custom piece of art. It uses maths previously developed for generating images that had low resolution and limited (8bit) colour options available. For information on the algorithm implemented look here. Dot-Art takes low colour and low resolution to the extreme.
The templates created here are based on just 12 colours. They are the colours easily available here. The artwork is designed for these stickers. There are 476 stickers of each colour in this pack. On the second page of the downloaded template the number of each colour sticker you need is printed. The overall number of stickers depends on the size of the art, there is the option for either A1, A2, or A3 paper. As paper size decreases the resolution is lower, but it will take less time to complete
The templates are A1, A2, or A3 pages with the required colour sticker printed in each location. Additional instructions are one the second page of the downloaded template. A1 paper allows for a resolutions of 135px x 92px [ie low resolution]. A3 paper is only 65px x 45px. Even A3 will take roughly 5 hours to complete the artwork.
It can be challenging to find good input photos - try things with clear colour blocks and relatively simple shapes. Too much complexity will overwhelm the resolution. There are some Examples - but I really recommend trying to find a personal photo that works. Perhaps it will make an excellent gift for friends or family.
Welcome to dot-art, we hope you can use this website to create your own piece of art. Get started by dragging your own photos or images onto the canvas below, or have a look at the tutorials and examples.
Choose the size of your paper. An A3 sticker art takes around 5hrs to complete. A2 and A1 quite a bit longer but the increased resolution really helps the image quality.
